Our midfield
Plenty to choose from when all are fit, but what is our best combination?
With Lanzini, Antonio, Kouyate and probably Carvalho coming in, and even Rice knocking on the door, I think we are on paper very well set up.

Arno, Noble, Fernandes and Ayew was a disaster, escpeasially the latter two.

So how does it look like from now on for you?

Re: Our midfield
Was thinking of the midfield earlier actually, serious question but what options do we have down the right and left? I'm probably forgetting someone but can only think of Antonio and Arnie and not going to include Snodgrass

Re: Our midfield
I think CM is where we need to make the step up. Lanzini is head and shoulders above the rest of the pack and the others are all much of a muchness imo. Hopefully the portugese lad will improve us but I still think if we could offload a CM it would be well worth getting Wilshere in.

Noble, Kayoute and Fernandes move the ball to slowly for me and a fit Wilshere is a step up on them and even Obiang.

Re: Our midfield
in the areas that matter, either wing and attacking central midfield we're desperately short. we need at least two more or hernandez will struggle to get regular chances

Re: Our midfield
Obviously Lanzini can play wide but generally regarded that this is a bit of a waste of his talents.

Sakho can also play in a wide position, though not as an out and out winger.

We are supposed to be looking at Jota from Brentford.

Re: Our midfield
Very straightforward imo - Carvalho takes the anchor role, with Fernandes and Lanzini as the CMs.

So what's our best line-up, with Carvalho and with everyone fit (except Carroll maybe)?

Re: Our midfield
Miike, what about replacing Obiang with Sakho up beside Pea?

Defensively I agree Obiang coming in with William

I thought one of your wacky ideas was to have Lanzini playing left wing?

Re: Our midfield
I realise Rice can paly in Midfield, but isn't his position actually centre half?

Re: Our midfield
You would like to think that in home games and 'winnable' games against the also rans we could be more OFFENSIVE and not have two DMs.

In the tough games I think that's a consideration, but breaking the club record on a left wing changes that a bit. For me, the whole idea of spending big on Carvalho is to give more license to creative players in the middle of the park - hope it works out that way.

Re: Our midfield
I've always felt that having Lanzini in the centre pulling the strings was the best way to go, personally.

But if Snodgrass leaves, then we're struggling for wingers (which is ironic as we were probably overloaded with them not so long ago) so I could understand him filling in there if need be.

Re: Our midfield
For any team to do well they need to sort out the defence first.

Re: Our midfield
It's in games where we're up against battering ram players who are going to whack us at set pieces, that's where a midfield of Obiang, Kouyate and Carvalho looks appealing. Actually if you want to batter another opponent with set-pieces the same might be true.

It's a bit of the 'good player in a bad team' mentality. If we're going to be a bad team this season then shoving in the big lads just for their size starts to make more sense. Hope it doesn't come to that.

Re: Our midfield
kd, I just can't see bilic going two up top. the thing with Obiang is he's played wide for previous clubs and with him comfortable with his left foot can feed Arnie & Cresswell from that position likewise Lanzini to Antonio. getting Cresswellbaco in the team is key for me as that the gives Arnie more license to cut inside, what's noticeable with Arnie is he's not going to offs much coverage for our left back so that makes Obiang even more valuable when not in possession

Re: Our midfield
I don't think that we are particularly going to play with wingers this season. I think that we will play a back four in front of which we will have 2 DMs, Lanzini and Antonio and Arnautovic supporting Pea. The full backs will push on and that will still leave a block of 4 to defend on the break.
